Poker House Rules for Home Games
Great home poker games run on clear house rules. You do not need a giant rulebook, but you do need consistency.
Use these poker house rules as a template for your game night.
Buy-In and Rebuy Rules
Start here so money questions do not interrupt hands.
- Set a default buy-in amount.
- Decide whether rebuys are allowed.
- Decide if rebuys close at a specific time or remain open.
Write this down where everyone can see it.
Blind and Button Rules
- Confirm small blind and big blind before the first hand.
- Dealer button moves clockwise every hand.
- In heads-up play, dealer posts small blind and acts first pre-flop.
Clear blind/button rules remove most early disputes.
Betting and Action Rules
- Action proceeds clockwise.
- Verbal declarations are binding.
- Chips crossing the betting line count as action.
- String bets/raises are not allowed.
When in doubt, pause and resolve before the next card is dealt.
Showdown Rules
- Last aggressor shows first, then clockwise.
- Mucked hands are dead once discarded.
- Tabled hands speak for themselves.
If your group prefers โall cards upโ at showdown, agree to it before the game begins.
Etiquette Rules
- No slowrolling.
- No discussing live folded hands that affect action.
- Keep side conversations from delaying action.
- Be ready when action is on you.
Good etiquette keeps the game social and fair.
Tie-Break and Dispute Rule
Every home game needs one final rule:
- The host/manager makes final decisions for edge cases.
- If a major dispute occurs, apply the same ruling consistently moving forward.
Consistency is more important than perfection.
House Rules + Setup Work Together
